FIFA Overturns Balogun Ban, Clears U.S. Striker for Belgium Showdown

FIFA has officially cleared United States striker Folarin Balogun to feature in Monday's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter against Belgium after overturning the one-match suspension he received following his controversial red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun, who netted the decisive goal in the USA's Round of 32 victory, was later sent off during the same match, resulting in an automatic suspension. However, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee reviewed the incident and ruled that the enforcement of the disciplinary sanction should be suspended, making the forward eligible for the crucial knockout fixture in Seattle.

The ruling, reported by Fox Sports on Sunday, comes despite FIFA regulations offering the United States Soccer Federation no formal right to appeal the dismissal.

The sending-off sparked widespread debate after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) advised Brazilian referee Raphael Claus to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor, even though Balogun had not initially received a caution during play.

Reacting to the development, the United States Soccer Federation expressed satisfaction with FIFA's decision.

"We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans," the federation said in a statement shared through Fox football analyst Stu Holden.

Balogun has been one of the standout performers for the United States at this year's tournament, leading the team's scoring chart with three goals.

FIFA's decision is consistent with Chapter 4, Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code, which permits its judicial bodies to fully or partially suspend the implementation of disciplinary sanctions. The regulations also stipulate that if a player benefiting from such a suspension commits a similar offence during the probationary period, the original sanction may be reinstated alongside any additional disciplinary action.

Balogun's return provides a significant boost for the United States as it prepares for a high-stakes clash with Belgium, with a place in the World Cup quarter-finals on the line.
