Trump Administration to Closely Observe Nigeria’s 2027 Elections — US Congressman

 The administration of United States President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria's 2027 general elections, according to US Congressman Riley Moore, who said Washington is keenly interested in how the electoral process is conducted.

Speaking in an interview with NoireTV published on the platform's social media channels on Sunday, Moore, a Republican representing West Virginia, said the credibility and execution of Nigeria's next elections would be under close scrutiny by both himself and the Trump administration.

Responding to a question on whether the United States could play a greater role in supporting transparent elections in Nigeria, Moore said:

"We're certainly going to be watching these results and how these elections unfold and how they're executed. That's something that myself and the administration are going to be paying very close attention to."

The congressman also revealed that the US House of Representatives is considering an appropriations bill containing provisions related to Nigeria, particularly on issues of religious freedom and US security assistance.

According to Moore, the proposed legislation includes what he described as "strong and aggressive" measures that could shape future relations between the United States and Nigeria.

"We're working on Congressman Chris Smith's bill, which I'm proud to co-sponsor. More importantly, people should pay attention to the appropriations bill that will be before the House. It contains significant language relating to Nigeria, including the persecution of Christians, restrictions on security assistance to the Nigerian government, and steps that must be taken," he said.

Moore expressed confidence that the legislation would eventually become law, adding that its provisions would have a binding effect on US policy towards Nigeria.

"That bill is likely to become law. We're hoping to pass it today, and it contains strong provisions that will guide our relationship with Nigeria going forward," he stated.

The lawmaker further disclosed that he would continue engaging the Trump administration on developments concerning Nigeria, noting that he was scheduled to meet President Trump during a dinner with other members of Congress.

"I continue to work with the administration on the next steps we're going to take. I'll be meeting President Trump tonight over dinner with other members, and these issues remain very important to him," Moore added.
